The Compromise consisted of laws admitting California as a free state, creating Utah and New Mexico territories with the question of slavery to be determined by popular sovereignty, settling a Texas-New mexico boundary dispute in the former's favor, ending the slave trade in washington, D.C.,and making it easier for the southern states to recover fugitive slaves. The bill was separated into five individuals so that congressman could abstain or vote on each based on their interests.All the bills passed, signed by Fillmore, and enabled congress to avoid sectional and slavery issues for several years.

Dred Scott decision of 1857 was one of Americas most controversial event. The U.S. Sperm Court issued a decision in the case of Scott vs. Stanford. Brought to court by Scott, a slave who had lived in a free state with his owner before returning to the slave state of Missouri. Scott argued that his time spent in a free state entitled him to emancipation. In the decision of chief Roger Taney a supporter of slavery disagreed. The court found that no black free or slave could claim U.S. citizenship and could no longer petition the courts for their freedom. The decision angered the abolitionist and raised tension between the north and south. Which would led to the Civil War.
The lincoln-Douglas Debates was a series of seven debates one in each of the state's congressional between Stephen Douglas and Abraham lincoln during the 1858 Illinois state election campaign. They discussed issues that were critical an of importance to the sectional conflict over slavery and states' rights though neither man wanted slavery. They both had different ways of handling it Douglas believed in popular sovereignty and Lincoln believed that slaver was immoral and should be abolished. The also touched deeper questions that would continue to influence political discourse. Although Senators were elected by the states legislatures Lincoln and Douglas took their arguments to the people. these debates shaped their political future putting Lincoln in office and Douglas stripped of his power in senate for his further alienation of the buchanan administration and the south.
Harper's ferry was the location of a raid by abolitionist john brown who led a 21 man army with five blacks to raid of a federal arsenal at Harper's ferry in Virginia. Brown hoped that the raid would prompt slaves throughout Virginia and the south to rise up against their masters. But is soon stopped by Robert E. Lee gen. of the northern Virginia army who only need 36 hours to end John Brown raid and capture he and his man and sentenced them to death by hanging. The Harper's Ferry battle led to more proslavery states seceded from the Union. The raid got reactions from both sides the would start to take more military action against the south and the south taking more actions to those who they thought had anti-slavery views.

By the time of Lincoln inauguration seven states seceded from the Union and the Confederate States of American was formally established, with Jefferson Davis as its president. within on mouth of his presidency the american Civil war after the south opened fire on Union held fort Sumter in south carolina. In 1863 as the tides turned against the south Lincoln emancipated the slaves declaring their rights to freedom. Lincoln was reelected in 1864 and was assassinated by john Wilkes Booth five days after the south surrender and ending the Civil war.
